Sr. Catherine Mutuku – Missionary Benedictines of Tutzing
One of my most vivid memories of Pope Francis is from the very moment of his election. He stood before the world and, in a striking gesture of humility, asked for the prayers of the people before giving his own blessing. From that moment, I saw in him a true shepherd—one among the flock, not above it. His personality radiates humility, compassion, and love that extends beyond all boundaries.
When he chose the name Francis, it was clear he was embracing the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi—a symbol of simplicity, care for the poor, and love for creation. Through his leadership, especially in Laudato Si’, Pope Francis has renewed the Church with a message of ecological conversion and solidarity with the marginalized.
Pope Francis’ way of life has greatly influenced me and strengthened my vocation. His deep concern for the poor and his embrace of a simple lifestyle are aligned with the charism of my congregation, which is devoted to serving the marginalized and forgotten. His witness has encouraged me to live my call more intentionally and joyfully.
As the head of the Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Commission in my congregation, Laudato Si’ has become more than an encyclical—it’s a way of life. I have taken its message to heart and strive to lead by example in environmental care, community living, and sustainable action. His teachings have not only inspired but challenged me to be more committed to caring for our common home.
Pope Francis is a humble servant leader who walks the talk. His legacy reminds us that true greatness lies in simplicity, service, and love.
