The Association of Sisterhoods of Kenya (AOSK) opened its 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) today, July 8, under the theme: “Pilgrims of Hope in Mission: AOSK Walks Steadfast Towards a Future of Resilience, Self-Reliance, and Sustainability.” The meeting, which runs until Friday, July 11, brings together congregational superiors from across the country to reflect on the role of women religious in today’s world and to collectively seek pathways for a sustainable future rooted in faith, service, and unity.

During the opening session, Sr. Josephine Atswele, SMK read the written welcome remarks of Sr. Josephine Kangogo, AOSK Chairperson. In her message, Sr. Kangogo welcomed all present, grounding her words in the AGM’s theme. “We are pilgrims, journeying together, trusting in God’s providence and bringing hope to a world that longs for healing and transformation,” she stated. She reminded the assembly that this missionary journey calls for courage and perseverance, resilience in the face of trials, nurturing self-reliance within communities, and responsible stewardship of creation to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
In her address, Sr. Pasilisa Namikoye, LSOSF, AOSK Executive Secretary, reaffirmed the association’s long-standing mission to uplift those who are often forgotten by society. “AOSK has remained steadfast in its mission through innovative solutions, strategic partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to its values,” she said. “Over the years, AOSK has equipped women religious and marginalized communities with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary for self-sufficiency.” She stressed that fulfilling the mission of AOSK requires collaboration, teamwork, and a shared commitment to the association’s goals.

The opening Mass was led by Rt. Rev. Hieronymus Joya, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Maralal and Chair of the KCCB Commission for Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. In his homily, Bishop Joya reflected on the scriptural readings of the day and skillfully wove them into the AGM’s theme. Referencing Genesis 32:22–32, he described Jacob’s wrestling with God as a metaphor for the internal struggles of religious life, struggles that, when met with faith and perseverance, lead to transformation and blessing. “God can change our situations,” he encouraged. He also reflected on Matthew 9:32–38, highlighting Jesus’ compassion and the pressing need for laborers in God’s vineyard. “As AOSK, you are called to exercise compassion within and beyond your congregations,” he said. The bishop emphasized the importance of strong community life, support systems, and self-reliant practices rooted in the unique charisms of each congregation. He concluded by invoking the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, and the saints, asking for blessings upon all the sisters and their collaborators.

Later in the day, Fr. Bonaventure Luchidio, Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) at KCCB, offered a powerful reflection on the theme Pilgrims of Hope in Mission. Drawing from Scripture, he referenced the moment when Jesus tells a healed man, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go,” urging the sisters to rise in faith and continue their journey of mission and sustainability. Fr. Luchidio encouraged congregational leaders to foster innovation and creativity in their communities particularly by supporting income-generating activities and helping sisters acquire practical skills like product marketing. He also spoke about the importance of balancing prayer life, apostolic work, and responsible use of social media. Stressing the role of the evangelical vows in shaping attitudes and actions, he called on the sisters to remain rooted in holiness, exercise due diligence in external engagements, and guard against misplaced trust. “We must serve with zeal and resilience,” he concluded.

As the AGM continues over the coming days, participants are expected to engage in further discussions, sessions on different topics relevant to religious life today, and spiritual renewal moments. All with a focus on deepening mission, fostering unity, and preparing religious life for a vibrant future. A World Café session has also been organized to enable participants to better understand AOSK’s diverse programmes and activities through interactive dialogue, shared learning, and collective reflection.
