Sr. Eutropia Chao – Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood, Canonist
To me, Pope Francis is both a brother and a father—a man of hope, encouragement, and boundless love for all, regardless of religion or background. His leadership and humility have deeply shaped my faith, my mission, and my life.
I had the privilege of meeting Pope Francis twice—first in South Korea in 2014, and then in Nairobi in 2015. In Korea, during a conference, I remember him pointing toward us in the crowd as African sisters among the Korean faithful. We stepped forward and encountered him up close. In that moment, I felt as though a big brother had come to visit us in our missionary work. His presence radiated love and encouragement, renewing my zeal to continue serving in Asia. I felt truly seen, affirmed, and uplifted.
One of the most impactful teachings for me was his 2020 encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, released during the COVID-19 pandemic. It spoke to the heart of what it means to live as brothers and sisters in a shared world—caring for one another and building community in love. It helped me, and those I minister to, find meaning and courage in uncertain times.
Laudato Si’, his encyclical on care for our common home, has also been a daily inspiration. I love gardening, planting flowers, and creating beautiful, clean environments. Pope Francis’ call awakened in me a deeper sense of environmental stewardship. Whether in Kenya or Korea, I take individual responsibility: collecting plastic bottles, recycling, and even using them to make Christmas trees. I encourage others to plant trees, landscape, and embrace creative recycling. His words remind us that even small acts of care matter deeply.

As a canonist, I am particularly inspired by Pope Francis’ boldness in Church reform and his pastoral approach to canonical procedures. He has challenged me to approach my work with courage, humility, and faithfulness. His example has taught me to serve with humor, compassion, and deep commitment to the apostolate.
Pope Francis’ legacy continues to shape how I work with youth, children, and vulnerable families. Our congregation runs a school for street children, many of whom were once rejected and forgotten. Through education, some have even gone on to university and abroad—an incredible transformation. We also support young mothers and families facing difficulties, offering them love and dignity.
Pope Francis was a man of peace, simplicity, and deep humanity. His legacy will live on in all of us who were touched by his words, his example, and his love.
Wonderful dear Sr. May the legacy of Pope Francis continue to speak loud today and in the days to come
Amen
