As a religious woman actively engaged in social justice and legal advocacy, the name Pope Francis evokes in me a deep admiration. He is, to me, a Pope for the people—someone who rose beyond the confines of Catholicism to serve all of humanity across the globe.
Pope Francis has been a tireless champion of social justice, travelling the world with a message of peace and non-violence. His commitment to dialogue, especially in conflict zones such as South Sudan—so close to us—demonstrates his heart for humanity. His environmental encyclical, Laudato Si’, called for global care for our common home and is a groundbreaking work that continues to shape ecological awareness and responsibility around the world.
He spoke out against clericalism, urging pastors to “smell like the sheep”—to be present, involved, and compassionate. He reminded us that the Church is for all people. As religious women, we are especially grateful that Pope Francis elevated our visibility within the Church. He opened new doors for women religious, even within the Vatican, by appointing them to influential positions where they could contribute meaningfully and lead with wisdom. He also welcomed the laity into leadership, which was truly remarkable.
Pope Francis broke the mold of papal tradition. He chose simplicity, lived humbly, and stayed mindful of the poor and marginalized, embodying the very values of the Gospel. His life is a living testimony of Catholic Social Teaching—not just in words, but in action. He showed us what it means to lead through service.
He was a holy man who longed for a global community rooted in peace and dialogue—across faiths, especially between Muslims and Christians. He believed in solving conflict through conversation and nonviolence, always encouraging us to see each other as brothers and sisters.
I will never forget the image of Pope Francis kissing the feet of prisoners—such a profound gesture of humility. His papacy left us with countless reminders that leadership is service, and that true greatness lies in simplicity and love.

Great piece on our beloved Pope Francis. You have captured his life so well. Indeed he lived, taught and dreamt for a world where all will be treated with respect. That we woul choose nonviolence as our way of life and doing. We were truly blessed to have him. He was a true shepherd.. Thank you Sr Hedwig for this tribute. May he rest im peace.
