Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Champions Research and Prophetic Mission of Catholic Sisters

At the heart of the Catholic Sisters Initiative is a deepening commitment to research-driven, faith-inspired solutions that transform the lives of Catholic sisters and the communities they serve. This message was powerfully delivered by Sr. Jane Wakahiu, Associate Vice President of Program Operations at the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, during the 4th Catholic Sisters Initiative Research Convening held at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya.

Drawing from Ecclesiastes 7:25 and Luke 4:18, Sr. Wakahiu emphasized that Catholic sisters are called not only to serve but to prophetically witness Christ’s healing and liberating presence in today’s world. “There is wisdom in this role. There is knowledge in this responsibility,” she said. “If we examine closely, research deeply, and bring to light what lies within and then discuss it, we can begin to change our practices.”

Sr. Wakahiu underscored the need for intentional learning and the integration of research into daily ministry. She highlighted that the foundation’s global support for Catholic sisters is grounded in both faith and data, with a strong emphasis on action research, collaboration, and documentation to inform pastoral practices and policies. “We consecrate persons, our presence is not only in doing,” she added, “but we need to be transforming lives, spiritually as well as physically.”

One of the key announcements at the convening was the launch of a $15 million fund, in partnership with the International Union of Superiors General (UISG), for the care of elderly and aging sisters. This milestone, she noted, is made possible through dedicated leadership from figures like Sr. Pat Murray, Executive Secretary of UISG, and Fr. Tom Gaunt, Executive Director of the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA).

Over the past four years, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation has invested over $103 million in Africa, including $9 million specifically for research, skills development, and elder care. This investment has led to the creation of elderly care networks in over 12 countries, offering tailored solutions and best practices across congregations.

Sr. Wakahiu emphasized that researchers must go beyond merely reflecting on problems. They must actively explore and propose solutions that can transform ministry and society. She noted that the true power of research lies in its ability to inform evidence based decision making, which leads to practical, meaningful change in congregational life and broader community service.“ When we apply research to lead progress, we can find solutions to present issues in our lives and our ministries,” she said. “By understanding research, we could improve not just the lives of sisters, but also those we care for in our communities and families.”

She called on members of the Global Research Network and Catholic research centers to continue bridging academic knowledge with pastoral mission. “I encourage you to embrace and become all that God has imagined for us, as pastoral agents, as ministers, as leaders, as consecrated persons, as parents and as young adults,” she said. “We have to work together. There is no choice in this contemporary society. If we don’t, we will live to tell.”

Concluding her remarks, Sr. Wakahiu reaffirmed the prophetic call of Catholic sisters and their vital role in shaping a more compassionate, faith-filled world:

“Africa is full of grace filled stories. And the sisters’ prophetic voice remains critical to healing hearts and bringing hope where it is most needed.”
